‘I can’t do a bit without art.’

Sangee Shrestha, needs no introduction when it comes to the domestic art segment. She holds a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts from Tribhuvan University coupled with a master’s degree in Nepali History, Culture and Archeology. Besides painting, she also writes articles on issues relating to art.
Moreover, she is a well-known illustrator. She has exhibited her creations in numerous countries across the world. She has also lent her illustrations in dozens of children literacy books. Kathmandu Infotiser had a small chat with her over the current state of art and about her strugglesto make it far enough.

What’s your impression of the current state of art in Nepal?

As Nepal is known as the nation in artistic works, I think we can’t just be proud of our historic achievements. The young breed of artists has brought about tremendous changes in the Nepali art scene with their guts to experiments and innovate, which has led the whole artistic movement to a new direction. I think the working habit of the younger generation, coupled with their thirst to learn and demonstrate can take Nepali art sector to newer heights. I think our collective tendency of talking more and working less has obstructed our walk towards artistic prosperity.

Who are your inspirations in this field?

I draw inspiration from creations soaked in artistic flair and genius, I don’t focus too much on individual artists but rather on their creative accomplishments. I admire legendary artists like Shashi Shah and Durga Baral. As for international artists, I look up to Constable, Monet and Van Gogh,

What are the significant awards and recognitions that you have attained so far?

I have received numerous awards, the latest one being the ‘Best Art Teacher’ from Camelart foundnation in India. Art admires appreciate my work and I think that’s the mother of all awards and recognition. My works have been exhibited in countries like Japan, Germany, the USA and the UK.

Is there any significant work that you would like to mention here?

There is not just one but many – some from Installation Art while some from Illustration art. I exhibited a video art recently.

What is your biggest ambition?

To remain in the memory of all the people I Know as a successful artist and a good person.

What is art for you? What are your plans ahead?

It’s everything for me. I just can’t imagine my daily routine without art. As for plans, I am trying to reform my painting style and am planning to exhibit those ideas soon.
